Beyond Habits: The Power of an Identity Shift

Beyond Habits: The Power of an Identity Shift

Most people approach change backward. They say, "If I go to the gym every day (Action), I will have a fit body (Result), and then I will be an Athlete (Identity)."

But life doesn’t work that way. Motivation is a finite resource; it eventually runs out. To create a change that lasts a lifetime, you must flip the equation. You don’t exercise to become fit; you exercise because you ARE a person who values health.

This is the Identity Shift.

1. The Three Layers of Change

To understand how to shift your identity, imagine an onion with three layers:

  • The Outer Layer (Outcomes): This is what you get (e.g., a promotion, a specific bank balance).
  • The Middle Layer (Processes): This is what you do (e.g., your study schedule, your work routine).
  • The Core (Identity): This is what you believe about yourself.

If you only change the outer layers, your "internal thermostat" will eventually pull you back to your old self. This is why many people succeed for a week and then slip back into old patterns. Their actions were inconsistent with their internal story.

2. Evidence-Based Belief: The "Voting" System

You cannot simply "think" yourself into a new identity. The subconscious mind requires proof. In NLP, we understand that our identity is built on the repetitive data we feed our brains. Every action you take is a vote for the person you wish to become.

If you choose a salad over junk food, you cast a vote for a healthy person.

If you spend 20 minutes deep-working instead of scrolling on your phone, you cast a vote for a focused professional.

If you wake up at your first alarm instead of hitting snooze, you cast a vote for a disciplined individual.

You don’t need a unanimous vote to win an election; you just need the majority. Every small win strengthens the new identity.

3. Practical Steps to Shift Your Identity

As a coach, I focus on the "how." Here is how you can begin your shift today:

  • Decide Who You Want to Be: Don’t focus on the goal (e.g., "I want to earn more"). Focus on the identity (e.g., "I am a high-value professional").
  • Identify the "Smallest Move": Ask yourself, "What would a disciplined person do right now?" They might not finish the whole project today, but they will definitely start the first task.
  • Watch Your Language: Stop saying, "I’m trying to be more disciplined." Instead, say, "I am becoming a person who respects their own time." Your subconscious is always listening to the labels you give yourself.

Identity change is not about being perfect; it is about being consistent with a new definition of yourself. When the "who" is clear, the "how" becomes natural.

What is one identity you are ready to step into today?

09 PRACTICAL TIPS TO REDUCE OVERTHINKING

Thinking is what makes you different from others. This mental process has changed the course of the entire humanity. It's the core of all mental activities. The development and the transformation each one of us can feel and notice are due to our thinking. It is bliss to humanity. It is so powerful that it decides your destiny and shapes your life. Your entire being is a sum of your thinking.

It is a continuous process. Your mind always gets occupied with different thoughts. These could be about your personal, professional, social, financial, and other aspects of life. You have to think to bring good out of each action you perform in day-to-day life. But, this bliss of thinking turns into a curse when you start thinking more than enough. Thinking is a two-way edge sword. It is always helpful to you when you do it appropriately but excess use of it kills you. It becomes harmful to your entire being when you do disproportionate thinking.

When a single thought is repetitively haunting you and disturbing your daily life, realize that you are now a victim of excessive thinking which is called overthinking. You must have found yourself thinking about past events unnecessarily or imagining a horrible future feeling uncomfortable and restless in the present moment due to overthinking.

Though overthinking is not a mental disorder, it is at the root of many mental disorders like anxiety, depression, insomnia, nervousness, and many more. It is an unhealthy habit that typically causes more stress by focusing more on the negative. It gives birth to a lot of negative emotions from fear to revenge. You always try to control something that is out of your control. Instead of coming up with a solution, you end up with a broken mind and heart. This vicious cycle of illogical and imaginative thinking keeps on replaying in your mind like a broken record.

Here are 7 practical ways that will help you to stop overthinking.

1. DEVELOPING AWARENESS

Becoming aware of what is happening inside your mind is the first step to breaking its flow. Overthinking makes you unaware of everything that you do at that moment. But when you become alert and know that you are in a process where you are crossing the boundary, you take a pause.

2. DISTRACT YOURSELF

We all know the importance of concentration but here distraction can help you to get rid of overthinking. When you overthink, you are focused on a single repetitive thought, unconsciously you are flowing with the flow. Engaging yourself in unusual activities which need your conscious attention can divert you from overthinking. You can choose activities like drawing, painting, crafting, and other social activities like attending functions, meetings, etc.

3. SHARING IS CARING

Thoughts bother you until they are not let go out of your head. Sharing your feelings and thoughts with others surely can help you to reduce overthinking. These are the thoughts that are not getting any solutions or conclusions that can find a way with the sharing. This process of sharing will let you understand whether you are doing it enough or more than enough. This process of exchanging thoughts gives you a new perspective and that would be the solution to your overthinking.

4. INCREASE YOUR ACCEPTANCE LEVEL

overthinking about the past is a sign of lacking acceptance. You keep on repeating the thoughts as you don't accept them. You can't change whatever happened so accept it. Instead of repeating why it happened to you, accept the event and move on. You need to be flexible and adaptable. Rigidity never lets you accept the event and decreases your comfort.

5. DEEP BREATHING

One of the life-surviving functions of the human is breathing, yet few people know how to breathe. It is not only about providing oxygen to your body but can help you to strengthen your mind and body too.

Breathing deeply from your stomach is the surest way to break the cycle of unwanted thoughts. You can do it by sitting down calmly or lying on the bed. Pay attention to inhaling and exhaling with closed eyes. Take a deep breath that will push your stomach out, hold it for a while and release it slowly. This process will make your mind calm and will fuel your body with energy.

You can schedule a specific time after every 90 minutes for deep breathing exercises. You can take 5 to 7 deep breaths in the scheduled time. You will start seeing results in a few days.

6. MEDITATION

Meditation is always better than any other activity you can do to make your mind calm and peaceful. Spending 10 minutes a day meditating can reduce overthinking to a greater level. It has a direct relation to your pre-frontal cortex which manages higher-order brain functions, like increased awareness, concentration, and decision-making. Meditation brings positive changes in these functions as well as makes them stronger which leads to clarity in thinking.

7. BRING THOUGHTS ON THE PAPER

Write down the thoughts instead of letting them wander in your head. Thoughts have a high speed when they are in the head but they slow down when you write them down. Writing will give a sense of resolve and relief. It brings clarity as well.

8. THINK ABOUT WHAT’S IN YOUR CONTROL

Many of the events, situations, or people that you keep on thinking about are not in your control. You need to think only you can do something about. Thinking about uncontrollable situations is like catching the air. It is a total waste of time and energy.

9. LIVE OUT OF YOUR HEAD

The real life is out of your head. What is in your head is the perception of reality. When you are suffering from any thought in your mind that thought needs not to be always true. It is just an opinion you have about reality and it is always different from what is going on in your head. Don’t live in imagination. Don’t ask ‘what if?’ as it will just create another thought.

“NOTHING WILL KILL YOU MORE THAN THE WEIGHT OF YOUR OWN THOUGHTS”.

They give you a reason to act accordingly.

The followings are the ten significant values that can raise the standard of your life and makes it happier and more worthy.

You respect diversity. It builds trust, safety, and well-being in relationships.

6 SELFs FOR A HAPPY LIFE

6 SELFs FOR A HAPPY LIFE

Everyone always wants to experience endless happiness in his or her life. happiness is an intention in life. People do so many things to create happiness. They get educated, earn money, set family, look for new horizons of ventures, and get ready to face all the challenges just for happiness.

Many try a lot of materialistic things to be happy. They search and experience tonnes of outside things to become happy, satisfied, and successful. To some extent, their tricks and ideas work but in the long term, they fail. The reason is they are focusing outside. They need to focus inside. They should focus on the self.  Paying attention to the self makes you strong inwardly to face all the challenges outwardly.

Everything begins with the self. It is the root of all good and bad, positive and negative you have in your life. it is the center point of all the gravitational force that you possess inside you which attracts all the good things to you and creates abundance and happiness. If you could make this self strong enough the success is yours.

Here are 6 SELFs, you must work on to live a happy, joyous, healthy, and abundant life.

1.    SELF AWARENESS

Self-awareness is the foundation of all types of development and progress. It is the first step of transformation. It makes you more human and laid the foundation for raising your standard.

Being aware is nothing but paying attention to your mind, body, and spirit. It is peeping into the inner world. It is always observing yourself. It is focusing on your thoughts, feelings, and behavior as well as your responses and reactions. It enables you to take the right paths for a better life. It gives you a proper idea about yourself. It helps you to know in detail about your physical, mental, and emotional strengths and weaknesses.

As you focus more on yourself you become more alive and confident about your every move in your life. Being aware of yourself leads you to evaluate yourself objectively, and understand and manage your emotions. It supports you to align your feelings and behavior to the values and principles.

Nobody else can understand you better than yourself, self-awareness allows you to meet yourself and identify who you are in reality.

“Self-awareness is the golden key to making life-changing decisions and sticking to them.”

2.    SELF ACCEPTANCE

The change initiates with self-acceptance. It is an individual's acceptance of physical, mental, and emotional positive as well as negative traits and attributes.

People tend to accept only the positive and good things they have and avoid accepting the negative or bad traits. But this non-acceptance of yourself makes you pessimistic and unhappy.  It creates obstacles in a way of improvement. If you don't accept yourself the way you are, how will others accept you? This will create a conflict. No one is perfect. Everyone has some flaws. Knowing the shortcomings and their acknowledgment and acceptance can turn them into strengths. If you want to get rid of all the drawbacks and negative traits, firstly you have to embrace them, and accept them. Don't be rude to yourself, be kind and helpful to yourself.

Unconditional acceptance of self provides you a lot of possibilities to make personal improvement.

Self-acceptance plants the seed of self-love.

“Self-acceptance is truly a heroic act.”

3.    SELF LOVE

Everyone loves. You must be in love with someone but do you love yourself? This question could be left unanswered. You get mad in love with others, but when the time comes to love yourself, you get confused. Your personal growth and development can't be achieved without loving yourself. It is a state of being kind and appreciating who you are. Self-love is a cause of living life at its best confronting all the odds. You can face all the criticism and judgments people throw at you only with self-love.

People point out your negative attributes and you start hating yourself. You hate appearance, physical deformities, mental inabilities, and so on but this will not make any difference. The difference is created only with self-love. It brings you real happiness. When you love yourself, you don't wait for others to appreciate you, admire you, respect you, or value you.

‘’ Love yourself unconditionally, just as you love those closest to you despite their faults.”

4.    SELF CARE

You must be advising your close people for taking care of themselves. But do you take care of yourself? You often take care of others as well care for others but when the time comes to care for yourself, you come on the back foot. Most of you neglect self-care or take care only when you face any illness.

Self-care is the process of taking care of your mind, body, and spirit for a better life. You should take care of your physical health as well as your emotions. The goal of self-care is total well-being. It is a must to live healthy, happy, and long life to care for oneself.

You should engage yourself in self-care activities like exercising, having healthy and nutritious food, taking proper sleep, and meditation for maintaining energy, positivity, and enthusiasm in everyday life. People who care for themselves live a happy and peaceful life.

“Self-care is how you take your power back.”

5.    SELF RESPONSIBILITY

Self-responsibility is a key to living a life on your values and principles. It is the simple act of carrying accountability for your actions. Your life is a result of your own decisions and actions. When you are self-responsible you take this outcome positively. You enjoy the outcomes. You don't blame others if you fail to achieve positive results but you try different ways to bring the positivity out of that negativity.

It is crucial for getting success and making you stay firm when you weigh down by mistakes, regret, and guilt. Taking responsibility for every good or bad situation in life will make you stronger and more optimistic.

It is only self-responsible who can take risks in their life and can make a difference. You don't impose your failures on others. You held yourself responsible for whatever happened in your life. This approach makes you more optimistic

“Self-responsibility is true wisdom: it is knowing that the only person you are accountable for is you.”

6.    SELF CONTROL

You try hard to reach the destination but many times you give up. You become a victim of temptations. You fail to achieve big due to a lack of self-control. Self-control provides you the superpower to achieve greater in your life.

Self-control is the ability to regulate your thoughts, emotions, and behavior when you are facing temptations. It is a must to have the self-control to create happiness in long run. It is considered a virtue in today’s world full of distractions. These distractions make you helpless and grab you in the clutches of temptations that bring you short-term pleasure but long-term pain. You must have control over yourself for making a difference in your life and creating something bigger and greater.

“If you learn self-control, you can master anything.”

BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE

BOOST YOUR CONFIDENCE

“The most beautiful thing you can wear is confidence.”

-Blake Lively

Do you want to participate in the competition?

Do you want to crack the examination?

Do you want to start a new business?

Do you want to deliver a speech?

Do you want to bounce back from a recent failure?

Do you want to stay firm on your decision when others are discouraging you?

Do you want to do something that you have not done ever before?

Several things you want to accomplish in your life. You are expecting dreams to come into reality. You are excited to get your goals. You wish to bring everything to your doorsteps. You desire positive outcomes in every area of your life. This all could be possible for you if you have self-confidence. Yes, confidence assures you success. It is a superpower you can perpetually have in your life. This is a common trait you will find in all great people in the world. It is a secret behind every successful story.

Whether you are a student, a teacher, a manager, a businessman, or an entrepreneur, you need the confidence to get done everything in your respective professional, social or personal life.

What Is Confidence?

Confidence is a feeling of belief and trust in your abilities and skills that cause you to accomplish the task. It is a positive sense of having the specific strengths to control challenging situations effectively. You feel sure about your competencies. It is a motivating energy flow that makes you ready for life's experiences. Your mind and gut get ready to act on the spoken words.

A realistic approach toward your abilities makes you balanced for possessing healthy confidence. When you are doubtful about your abilities either you have a little confidence or too much confidence. In such scenarios, you can be underconfident or overconfident. Underconfidence prevents you from taking risks and blocks your opportunities whereas overconfidence gives you an unrealistic feeling of superiority and arrogance.

Confidence brings a personal sense of being capable and competent. It creates stronger self-realization of your capabilities. It gives you a sense of having enough strengths.

“With the realization of one’s potential and self-confidence in one’s ability, one can build a better world.”

-      Dalai Lama

Importance Of Being Confident

The great story of an American sprinter Wilma Rudolph can make you realize how important to have confidence in your life.

A premature child born in 1940, she suffered from polio at age 4. The doctor said that she would never walk again in her life. She tried to walk with the braces on her legs for years. She didn't stop and started participating in competitions. With her remarkable confidence, she could make her way to the Olympics and became the first American woman to win three track and field gold medals in Olympics in a single Olympics.

She fought against all the odds in her life and made her dream a reality. She could make it due to her belief in herself that she could do it. Her confidence brought the best out of her and became the live example of a winning spirit for the entire humanity.

You will find thousands of people around you who have achieved unimaginable things in their life with self-confidence. You require confidence, whether you are at the peak of success or struggling for the bread and butter. It has the power of turning nothing into everything. It can fetch you victory from defeat. You can create a world out of zero with confidence

“It is confidence in our bodies, minds, and spirits that allows us to keep looking for new adventures.”

-Oprah Winfrey

 How To Be More Confident

Being confident is fascinating and admirable. A person with a lot of confidence gets respect and attention. He influences others. He makes his place in the crowd. Confidence is a virtue.

Though it seems to be difficult to instill this attribute, the good news is that it can be developed with the proper direction and efforts. Do you want to be more confident? Here are 10 ways to get significant and remarkable confidence.

     1. Think about your past achievements

Look at your past and count your achievements. You must have so many achievements and good days in your past life. Make a list of all the achievements that have made you feel proud from your childhood to the present time. Remembering those glorious moments creates energy and positivity in your mind in the present. It helps you to regain that confidence.

     2. Focus on your strengths

You already have a lot of good things in you. Whenever you face difficulties or challenges you think about your weaknesses and feel helpless but when you focus on strengths, you start feeling positive and confident. To realize these strengths just think about the bad days and think about what helped you to come out of those days. Again, make a list of strengths you possess and think how can you use those to make a difference.

     3. Get proper knowledge

Knowledge is a superpower. Most of the time you feel a lack of confidence when you don’t have a proper and enough knowledge of the field that you are dealing with. If you don’t prepare yourself with proper input, you may lose confidence. Proper preparation prevents poor performance. Learning, revising, practicing, and implementing will make you knowledgeable and confident.

     4. Manage positive self-talk

What happens to you when you come across a difficult task or never before done task, you start doubting yourself. Being doubtful about your abilities makes you think negatively about yourself. Thinking negatively about own self is nothing but negative self-talk.

You talk to yourself more than anybody else. Your self-talk reflects in your behavior. You can’t be positive if you are telling yourself that you can’t do it. You must speak yourself positively. You should use such motivating and inspiring words to make you feel confident.

     5. Don’t compare yourself with others

Comparing yourself with others is nothing but you are insulting yourself. If you are comparing yourself with those who are excellent to you will make you inferior and that will result in losing confidence. See you are not less or more than anyone else. You are unique. You have your way of thinking. You have your approach toward life and your ways of handling the situation. You are not ahead of anyone or behind anyone. You are at the right place of your own. Don’t compare yourself with others but compare yourself with yourself. Comparing with your performances will boost your confidence as you will realize your improvement.

     6. Have a company of motivators

You are an average of five people you hang around with. You feel confident when you are with the people who motivate you. Encourage and offer help to you to excel in your life.

Think about the people around you right now and find how many of them motivate you to face the challenges in your life. You should be surrounded by energy providers. Only confident people can make you confident. Find such confident people and get in touch with them always.

     7. Focus on your body movements

Amy Cuddy's wildly popular Ted Talk from 2012 explained the way your posture affects how you feel, using "power poses" as a tip to increase self-confidence. Slouching and bending your head make you feel low confident whereas sitting or standing straight up and holding your head high makes you confident. Sometimes energy flows from the body to the mind. Change in the way you sit, stand, walk and talk brings a change in your state of the mind.

Next time whenever you want to feel this positive emotion of confidence make a slight change in your posture and gesture. You will find yourself full of confidence.

    8. Practice positive affirmations

Affirmations are well-prepared instructions. These are prepared according to your need. When you want to feel more confident give yourself positive instructions like ‘day by day I am feeling confident, I am full of confidence, etc. Instructions should be mingled with the emotion of confidence.

    9. Learn to handle the criticism

You will find yourself surrounded yourself by a lot of discouraging and criticizing people. People don’t miss a single chance of talking bad about you. They will demotivate you. They will point out your mistakes. To stay firm and to feel confident against such criticism you need to learn to handle the criticism.

Ignoring such critics is the best way to reply to them. Doing the best using your abilities can be the answer to their criticism.

   10. Set goals

Goals motivate you to act as well as make you realize your abilities. You feel confident when you act on your goals and achieve many of them. Goals are magnets they fetch you towards them. They provoke you to take action.

A sense of achievement brings you peace of mind and satisfaction. These positive feelings boost your confidence.

To be confident you must do whatever makes you feel low confident.

THE POWER OF GRATITUDE

     THE POWER OF GRATITUDE

Gratitude is not only the greatest of the virtues but the parent of all others.” - Cicero

Do you feel stressed out about the people, things, and incidents in your life?

Do you think that nothing is good in the present life?

Do you always focus on the negative side of life?

Do you feel that life would be happier with different types of people, things, and situations?

I know you do think and feel so. Most of the time you just think about your weaknesses. You focus on the dark side of life. You have fed up with the people around you which could be your parents, spouse, children, colleague, or boss. You have got tired of the things in your daily life that could be anything from a toothbrush to your home. You have grown impatient with the daily activities. You are not happy with your body and physical appearance too. You feel low due to the so-called shortcomings that you have invented. Your mind is just wondering about the things that you don’t have. This thought of having nothing useful with you is making you pessimistic.

You always want something different and bigger in your life and you are not happy with the present life. it’s ok to want bigger in life but being not happy with what you have now makes you negative. This feeling of always lacking something and ignoring the good things you have or taking them for a grant makes you more unhappy.

While thinking about the future and lackings in life, you forget the blessings you have got in the present. It is like focusing on the thorns and ignoring the flowers, thinking about the piercing of the thorns, and neglecting the soft petals and enchanting fragrances.

And the foremost thing is that you are not only becoming negative about life but you are keeping yourself away from the most magical and powerful emotion i.e., GRATITUDE. Gratitude is the life-changing emotion you can ever have in your life if you just adjust your focus from wanting to having and convert it into action.

What Is Gratitude?

Gratitude which is known as thankfulness or gratefulness is an emotion and action of appreciation by a recipient of another’s kindness, help, favor, or other forms of generosity. It is considering and acknowledging the importance of the people, things, and incidents you have in your life and expressing your deep thankfulness towards them for being in your life. it is paying the attention to everything which is making your life and appreciating it with deep emotion and action of gratefulness. It is embracing good things you have and praising them.

Gratitude has religious, spiritual, and psychological perspectives. Every religion teaches us to value our human life. Spiritually gratitude helps us to get connected with our own higher self. Psychologically it creates a very positive impact on our mind and body. More recently a branch of psychology named positive psychology has expanded research on the importance of gratitude. Researcher Robert Emmons has authored several writings on the psychology of gratitude, stating that being more grateful can lead to an increased level of well-being.

Steps Of Gratitude

Step 1 – first comes the acknowledgment of goodness in your life. you identify and realize everything positive you have in your life. You feel life is worth living. You start feeling the emotion of gratitude deeply.

Step 2 – Expressing your gratitude towards everything that could be any of your personality traits, people, things, and incidents in your life.

Step 3 – Adopting new behavior with everything that you feel and express gratitude. You feel the change in the way you look at everything. Your actions become more meaningful.

As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words but to live by them.

– John F. Kenedy.

-Ralph Waldo Emerson

How To Be More Grateful

Remember The Hard Times

You face a lot of difficulties in your life. When tough times get over you forget everything and everyone who helped you in hard times. You take for granted your own capabilities, people, and things in your life when life runs smoothly. Remembering those hard days will remind you of the importance of every hand extended to you to come out of the ditch of suffering and pain. When you realize the difference between where were you in the past and where are you in the present, your mind can easily get connect with the emotion of gratitude.

 Count The Strengths

Instead of focusing on the weaknesses, focus on the strengths. You have a lot of physical, mental, and emotional strengths. Understand the importance of each strength and realize how these good things have made your life happy and satisfied. How you have defeated the challenges using your strengths.

 Realize The Interdependency

You alone can’t live. You always need other people to lead your life. You are always depending on others to get so many essential things to spend life happily. Whoever and whatever you are, you are incomplete without the people and things around you. Your family, friends, relatives, and society make your life meaningful. Nature is there to nurture you. This principle of interdependency makes you realize what is the need of being grateful for everything you have and get your life.

Practice the Gratitude in Daily Life

You can practice gratitude with gratitude meditation and gratitude self-affirmation. While meditating think about the positive things in your life and express your gratitude deeply. Visualize every person helping you and express gratefulness towards them.  Make a list of all good things and give yourself suggestions that how grateful you are towards them.

Dear friends, make this gratitude ritual your habit. Let your subconscious flow unintentionally. You really have so much to be grateful for. You just need to know it.  This is the sure way of attracting abundance in life. Gratitude is vibration energy that can change your life.

“You have got a gift of 86,400 seconds today. Have you used one to say ‘THANK YOU’?”
